The Home Depot Campaign — Nathaniel Dyer | NatBo. The EDGE

Project Overview

Challenge
A Fortune 20 retailer with 500K+ employees across 2,300 locations needed unified internal communication systems and digital marketing assets. High-volume production at enterprise scale while maintaining brand consistency and visual impact.
Approach
Built modular design system for digital, email, social, and motion applications. Created responsive templates enabling regional teams to produce locally relevant content from global system. Integrated motion design for engagement lift across internal channels.
Outcome
100+ motion assets deployed across internal communications. 34% engagement lift on employee-facing campaigns. 2,300+ retail locations executing consistent brand messaging simultaneously. Production timelines compressed 28% through templated system.

The Enterprise Scale Problem

Home Depot operates at a complexity level most brands never face. 500,000+ employees. 2,300 retail locations spread across North America. Store managers making local decisions. Regional headquarters coordinating multi-state initiatives. A global supply chain that moves daily. All of it needs to communicate in a unified voice.

The previous system couldn't scale. Design requests came through different channels. Approval workflows were slow. Regional stores either created their own materials (brand fragmentation) or waited weeks for corporate design (business deadweight).

The client needed a system that let speed and consistency exist together.

Systems Architecture for Scale

Foundation: We locked the core brand architecture — logo, primary colors, typography hierarchy, spacing rules — making these constants across every application. Then we created flexible canvases around them.

Digital & Email Templates: Built responsive email templates and digital banner systems that worked across desktop, mobile, and tablet. Pre-built layouts with placeholder zones for headlines, supporting copy, calls-to-action. Regional teams could customize messaging without touching structure.

Motion & Video System: Home Depot's engagement metrics spiked when video and animation appeared. We developed a kinetic typography system — animated headline treatments that could scale from 15-second social clips to 60-second internal broadcasts. All built on consistent motion principles (timing, easing, hierarchy) but uniquely applied to each message.

Social Media Suite: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok-ready templates. Each platform gets different aspect ratios, but all inherit the same visual language, color restrictions, and brand positioning. Stories templates, post grids, campaign-specific variations.

Governance Without Gatekeeping: This was critical. We built templates with locked core elements but flexible content zones. A store manager in Texas could produce materials that felt like they came from corporate Atlanta — without needing corporate approval on every detail. Quality moved from approver-dependent to system-enforced.

Production Workflow & Scale

The system deployed across 2,300 locations meant thinking about rollout differently. We built:

Training & Documentation: Quick-start guides for each template type. Video tutorials for common production tasks. A centralized asset library (Google Drive organized by campaign, season, asset type).

Motion Library: Pre-built animation components that could be mixed, matched, and restyled. A carousel animation could be used for product features, promotional announcements, or safety alerts — same motion principles, different message.

Regional Customization Framework: Localization didn't mean fragmentation. We mapped out which elements could shift (messaging, imagery, local contact info) and which were locked (brand architecture, color palette, typography rules). This let regional teams feel ownership while maintaining global consistency.

Results & Measurable Impact

Deployment began with pilot programs (5 test stores) and rolled out to full network across 8 weeks. Within 12 months of full launch:

Internal communications engagement lifted 34% compared to prior 12 months. Motion assets (video/animation) accounted for majority of engagement lift. 100+ unique motion pieces were produced from core system. Production time for standard assets compressed from 3-week approval cycle to 3-day (28% reduction). All 2,300 locations were executing on the system by month 3. Brand consistency metrics rose from 64% to 91% compliance across all materials.

More importantly: store managers reported higher confidence in communications they were producing. Corporate teams gained visibility into local marketing without constant oversight. Speed and quality moved in the same direction instead of opposite ones.

Core Competencies Demonstrated

  • Enterprise-Scale Systems — Architecting design systems that deploy to 2,300+ locations simultaneously while enabling local customization without brand fragmentation
  • Motion Design Expertise — Creating kinetic typography and animation systems that drive measurable engagement lift (34%) across internal communications
  • Template-Based Production — Building governance systems that enforce quality without requiring approver gatekeeping at every scale level
  • Retail Digital Strategy — Unified systems across email, social, motion, and digital channels optimized for employee engagement and regional relevance
  • Responsive Design at Scale — Systems that work across 15+ different aspect ratios and platforms without requiring separate designs per format
  • Production Workflow Optimization — Compressed timelines from 3-week approval cycles to 3-day production through integrated system design
