Project Overview
The Financial Services Complexity Problem
Synchrony Financial operates in a regulatory environment where every word matters. SEC compliance on earnings, credit disclosures on partner programs, responsible lending messaging for healthcare financing, consumer protection standards across all communications. One misworded headline can trigger legal review cycles that compress campaign timelines from weeks to days.
The company manages multiple customer segments simultaneously: consumers applying for credit, retail partners promoting their programs, healthcare providers using point-of-sale financing. Each segment needs different messaging, different value propositions, different visual emphasis — but all of it has to come from one brand authority.
The previous workflow couldn't handle it. Campaign requests hit legal review immediately. Edits triggered re-approvals. Regional teams waited for corporate clearance before launching anything. Speed and compliance were locked in opposition.
Compliance as System Foundation
The Key Insight: Instead of treating compliance as a gate at the end of production, we integrated it at the beginning. Built templates with compliance zones pre-locked. Regulatory language was system architecture, not post-production review.
Messaging Architecture: We created a three-tier messaging framework — brand authority (locked, legally pre-cleared), segment-specific value (flexible within guardrails), and supporting details (regional customization points). This meant:
A healthcare financing campaign could adapt the headline for different provider types (hospitals vs. clinics) without changing the regulatory-cleared core messaging. A retail partner campaign could emphasize different product benefits for different merchandise categories without requiring new legal review. All from one base template.
Partner Program System: Synchrony manages partner programs across five different verticals — retail (home improvement, furniture, electronics), healthcare (medical, dental, vision), hospitality (travel, dining). Each vertical has different messaging needs, different compliance requirements, different partner expectations. We built a modular system where core brand and compliance scaffolding was identical, but the customization points were uniquely mapped to each vertical.
The Template Architecture
Template Tiers:
Tier 1 (Consumer Direct): Acquisition campaigns for consumer credit. Strict compliance requirements around APR disclosure, responsible lending language, clear terms. Templates pre-loaded with required legal copy in non-removable zones.
Tier 2 (Retail Partner): Point-of-sale materials, merchant promotions, staff enablement. Different legal requirements than consumer-facing (B2B vs. B2C). Templates allowed partner logos and merchandise-specific imagery while locking brand framework.
Tier 3 (Program Communications): Statements, account notifications, cardholder communications. Highest compliance sensitivity. Templates included dynamic legal copy zones that auto-updated when regulatory language changed.
Multi-Channel Execution: All three tiers worked across digital, email, social, PDF, and print. Responsive layouts for mobile-first consumers. Email templates built for Outlook compliance. Social crops pre-calculated for platform-specific aspect ratios. PDF forms with embedded legal language. Everything from one system.
Results & Impact
Deployment began with pilot program (two partner verticals, 10 campaigns) and rolled out across all five verticals within 12 weeks. Within first 12 months:
40+ campaigns deployed with zero compliance revisions or rework. 100% legal and brand governance sign-off rates on first submission. New regional teams reached productivity on day one with template system (compared to 2-3 week ramp with previous workflow). Multi-channel execution compressed from 6-week approval cycle to 8-day production cycle (85% reduction). Partner program engagement metrics increased 28% year-over-year, attributed to improved messaging clarity and faster campaign deployment.
Most importantly: compliance stopped being a blocker and became a system strength. Legal reviewed the framework once. Every campaign thereafter inherited clearance. The work moved fast because the guardrails were built in, not bolted on.
Enterprise Impact & Metrics
Core Competencies Demonstrated
- ✓ SEC Compliance Integration — Building campaign systems where regulatory requirements are architecture, not afterthought. Messaging frameworks that inherit legal clearance from system design.
- ✓ Financial Services Design — Understanding credit disclosure requirements, responsible lending messaging, consumer protection standards, and translating them into visual systems.
- ✓ Partner Program Systems — Managing five different customer segments and partner verticals from unified brand foundation. Segment-specific without brand fragmentation.
- ✓ Multi-Channel Production — Simultaneous execution across digital, email (Outlook-compliant), social, print, and PDF from single template system without format conflicts.
- ✓ Approval Workflow Compression — Reducing 6-week compliance cycles to 8-day production through integrated system design. Legal reviews framework once, not every campaign.
- ✓ Enterprise Governance — Building systems that enforce brand standards and compliance requirements without human gatekeeping at every deployment level.
